Government Institutions These institutions are run by state/central Government. The syllabus, curriculum and teachers are decided and selected by state/central. The education is provided through four units― Primary Schools , Middle Schools, High Schools and Higher Secondary Schools .

Educational Facilities at various levels in the District

There are 1901 government elementary schools distributed in different blocks out of which there are 755 New Primary School. Beside these 206 bridge course centers have been running in the scattered child population of the district.

The degree colleges are running under Vinoba Bhave University . Numerous facilities of higher education and secondary education facilities as well colleges are found in the district. The educational facilities available in the district have been mentioned as separate point in this chapter.

Dhanbad is distributed in eight blocks and 17 educational circles. It consists of 553 middle schools, 1348 primary schools. Beside these 6 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya are also opened preferably educationally backward block as Tundi, Govindpur, Topchanchi, Baliapur, Nirsa and Jharia . It also consists of a District Institute of Education and training for girls at Gobindpur. There is world wide institute Indian School of Mines situated along with Central Mining research Institute and Central Fuel Research Institute. These educational and research institutes facilitate the educational environment of Dhanbad .

Total literacy campaign at Dhanbad district was started in year 1993-94. In the 1998-1999 external evaluation of total literacy campaign of the district was conducted by Himalayan Region Study and Research Institute Delhi. On the basis of the evaluation literacy rate amongst 9-45 years target group has increased to 44.2% which is highest in the Hindi heartland.
